Anna Norton, MS, has been living with type 1 diabetes since August 1993. Chris Irish, RN, BSN, CDE, CPT has been a nurse in Central and Western Maine since 1999 and has been a diabetes educator since 2007. His passion for helping those with diabetes started while witnessing the devastating effects of the disease while working on an Acute Physical Rehabilitation unit, where he came to realize that many of the chronic complications of diabetes could be prevented through ongoing education and support. He has been an volunteer legislative advocate for both the ADA and the AADE and currently manages the diabetes education needs of the largest home health agency in central and western Maine. He has authored a printed booklet for newly diagnosed diabetics and is currently writing his first book about working on the front lines of the diabetes epidemic. This Fall he has invited an internationally recognized researcher, Eric Manheimer, to speak at the MeADE annual conference about his findings with the Paleo-style Diet. Christy Wilson, RD teaches, writes and speaks about food. She is a Registered Dietitian who aims to educate the public how to to choose, prepare and eat foods that will improve and sustain a healthy body. As a mom and wife, her work is as important to her personally as it is professionally.

Dr. Cori Cooper is a board certified ambulatory care pharmacist, certified diabetes educator, and an Integrative Nutrition health coach. Dr. Cooper received both her B.S. in biology and Pharm.D. from Xavier University of Louisiana. She then completed a primary care residency at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, Mississippi where she focused on chronic disease management, in particular diabetes. Following her residency, she served on the faculty at a college of pharmacy lecturing on diabetes and the practice of pharmacy and diabetes education. In addition to her faculty role, Dr. Cooper was the clinical pharmacist at a multidisciplinary clinic managing patients with diabetes and obesity. This led her to pursue her Masters in Public Health (MPH) from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Her education at Hopkins focused on health and behavior, specifically in the area of health disparities. Her experiences at Hopkins, in patient care, academia, and community health have created a rich foundation and appreciation of health and wellness. Dhiren Patel, PharmD, CDE, BC-ADM, BCACP, serves as a faculty member at the Alpert Medical School of Brown University and at Massachusetts College of Pharmacy (MCP) in Boston, MA. Dr. Elizabeth (Beth) Pegg Frates, is a physician as well as a certified health and wellness coach. She graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University, as a double major in psychology and biology. Then, she attended Stanford University Medical School where she chose the specialty of Physiatry. Dr. Frates came back to Boston for her internship in internal medicine at MGH and her residency at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital in the Harvard Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. There, she served as chief resident and President of the National Resident Physician Committee for the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
During her residency, she performed research on topics that launched her career trajectory on the topic of patient and care giver knowledge and expectations for functional recovery after stroke. The results are published in the American Journal of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation in 2003. Finding there was a gap in patient and care giver knowledge, she co-authored a book to help fill this gap. The book is titled Life After Stroke: The Guide to Recovering Your Health and Preventing Another Stroke (2006) Johns Hopkins University Press. Also, in residency Dr. Frates participated in research surveying physician on their personal exercise behavior and their exercise counseling behavior which was published in the Clinical Journal of Sports Medicine in 2000. This work revealed that physician who exercise, counsel on exercise. This study continues to be cited and replicated, reinforcing the need to educate and motivate physicians to embrace exercise as medicine for themselves and their patients.
In 2008, Dr. Frates started her formal journey into lifestyle medicine at the Institute of Lifestyle Medicine at Harvard Medical School where she created a lifestyle medicine interest group for the Harvard Medical School, which continues to thrive and has been replicated in many institutions including Stanford. She serves at the Director of Medical Student Education at the ILM and for 7 years has been the co-director of the Harvard Medical School (HMS), CME Tools for Promoting Healthy Change and the assistant director of the HMS CME Active Lives. Dr. Frates is an award winning teacher at Harvard Medical School earning distinctions for her tutorial facilitation work in multiple courses taught to the first and second year students at HMS including the Central Nervous System, Musculoskeletal System, Endocrine System and Introduction to the Profession of Medicine. In the fall of 2014, she created and taught the first lifestyle medicine course at Harvard, Psych E 1037 Introduction to Lifestyle Medicine at the Harvard Extension School. This course received rave reviews with an evaluation of 4.9 out of 5 for the course overall and for her as an instructor. Dr. Frates is passionate about teaching.
Dr. Frates has trained in many different programs addressing behavior change in order to learn how to empower people to adopt healthy habits, those that prevent stroke and other lifestyle related diseases. This training includes a certification in Motivational Interviewing from UMass, certification in health and wellness coaching (having studied four different programs including the Diabetes Prevention Program Lifestyle Coach), Mind Body Medicine with Dr. Herb Benson’s group, and Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction with Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn’s group. She has been actively involved with teaching evidence based wellness, healthy habits, stroke prevention as well as lifestyle medicine at the Harvard Medical School, Continuing Medical Education Conferences both nationally and internationally for years. Dr. Frates founded her own wellness coaching company, Wellness Synergy in order to empower individuals and groups attain their optimal level of wellness. In fact, she piloted wellness groups for stroke survivors and their caregivers at Spaulding a couple of years ago. She has developed 12 Steps to Wellness, which has helped people move from sitting on the couch eating potato chips to walking and tracking their steps with pedometers and enjoying fruits and vegetables. Hi, I’m Liz! Registered Dietitian and Certified Health Nut in San Diego, CA. I’ve had a passion for food, fitness and fun my entire life and am now have been able to have found a career I can do all three at the same time…enter, self-employment! I currently own my own business and am venturing into all sorts of new avenues in the nutrition field which I truly love.
My past work has led me to experience many different parts of the nutrition field, including senior nutrition, hospital and school foodservice, eating disorders and weight management, as well as marketing and product development over the past ten years. My current position has me doing what I love most, educating the public (that’s you!) about the importance of nutrition and health in our daily lives. Grace Rivers is a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, Certified Diabetes Educator, Health Coach and Licensed Dietitian in the state of Texas with more than 20 years of experience. Jackie Newgent, RDN, CDN, is a registered dietitian nutritionist and classically-trained chef. Mark Heyman, PhD is a clinical health psychologist and the director of the Center forDiabetes and Mental Health (CDMH). In addition to treating patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes, Dr. Heyman provides training for health care providers on how to identify and address the emotional and behavioral aspects of diabetes in their patients. He also works with pharmaceutical and medical device companies to help them understand these issues and incorporate this information into their sales, marketing, and patient education materials. He is particularly interested in empirically supported behavioral interventions that promote behavior change and improve physical and mental health in people with diabetes.

Maureen Sullivan has worked for many years as a Registered Nurse, most of them in emergency and trauma services. Samantha Pyser, RD, CDN, CDE is a Registered Dietitian, Certified Dietitian Nutritionist and Certified Diabetes Educator living in Queens, New York. She is currently working full-time as the outpatient dietitian in the adult medicine practice at a hospital in the South Bronx.She is also a department manager, and the program coordinator for their Diabetes Self-Management Education program which is accredited through the AADE. She wrote the Medical Nutrition Therapy Curriculum for the UNTHSC Professional and Continuing Education Office and crafted it to teach physicians to educate patients about nutrition using plain language messaging. She also participated in research teaching librarians and clinicians health literacy basics and planned two UNTHSC Health Literacy Symposia. She currently remains on the faculty in both capacities.
Teresa has a great diversity of skills, expertise and experience. She has taught at the university and community college level, served as a health coach and public speaker and worked with patients as a clinical provider. Early in her career, she worked in both hospital and community settings with infants, children and mothers facing nutritional adversities as well as promoting nutritional health and wellness. She currently teaches Maternal Child Health Nutrition at UNTHSC.
Teresa is also a current media representative for the Texas Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. She previously received the Texas Academy “Media Award” for excellence in nutrition-based media and served on the board. Teresa has over 13 years of experience as a media spokesperson on both a national and local level. She is on Twitter @TravelingRD and has her own blog, The Traveling RD.
